Dr Dunia Ismail

Dr Dunia Ismail is a Consultant Paediatrician with speciality interest in Endocrinology and Diabetes. She works at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital where she has been a consultant for the last 13+ years. She is currently the clinical lead for the Paediatric Endocrine and Diabetes service in RACH.

Her area of expertise includes all types of diabetes (type 1, type 2 and rare monogenic forms). She manages most of her patients on the latest cutting edge technology closed loop insulin systems and sensors (HCL or artificial pancreas) and is comfortable managing and advising on all the commercially available HCL pump systems including the OP5.

Dr Ismail also sees patients with all different endocrine conditions. This would include growth disorders (short stature or tall stature) pubertal concerns around early or late puberty, thyroid disorders, menstrual irregularities, and endocrine cause of fatigue/ queries of hypoglycaemia.

Dr Ismail also runs CEW (complications of excess weight) clinics in the NHS - therefore is more than happy to see children and young people with Obesity or excess weight concerns and direct them appropriately to the most appropriate actions and to exclude endocrine complications where present.

After completing her medical training and core Paediatric Specialty training in Europe (University Hospitals of Palermo, Italy), Dr. Ismail received International Speciality training in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes.

She undertook a clinical research fellowship at the world-renowned Paediatric Centre of the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne in 2004, where she worked under the guidance of Professor G Werther, Dr. M Zacharin and Professor F Cameron, all world experts in this field. Dr Ismail published four articles following her time there, three of which as first author.

After that, Dr Ismail worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for four and a half years as a senior clinical fellow under world expert Prof Khalid Hussain, developing a sub-speciality interest in glucose physiology and Hyperinsulinism. She has produced many first-author papers while in GOSH on the topic.

She has since been a consultant in the NHS for the last 13 years.

Dr Ismail is comfortable seeing patients from 0-19yrs of age in her clinics. She is available for both in person and virtual appointments. As per good practice and the nature of the consultation usually the initial appointment is in person unless agreed otherwise.

Dr Dunia Ismail is multilingual and is fluent in Italian (mother tongue).She has studied medical Italian and is therefore comfortable running medical consultations in this language if required.

She is also fluent in Arabic and French. Outside work, she enjoys spending time with her family and playing the piano.
